As the first year back from COVID-19, 2022 presented a fresh start and everyone was ready for our new classes and classmates. We were introduced to the College theme for the year, ‘Meet all with peace and love’ and Mr Tyrell made a beautiful painting reflecting the new theme.
Early in the year, everyone had to go with their homerooms in order to get their school photos taken.
On 11 February all of Padua Tyabb headed out to Pines Forest Aquatic Centre for the Padua Tyabb swimming carnival. There were many different events to compete in such as freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. There was even a massive water slide which was packed with students wanting to try it out.
A Year 8 Excel Day was held where Year 8s got to experience different workshops. The day started with a smoking ceremony by an indigenous organisation that then hosted one of the events which was learning how to throw spears and create fire. Another was Elephant Ed which let students talk about hard subjects and the last one was Throw Like a Girl which educated students about phrases and meanings that we shouldn’t use.
On 1 March, Shrove Tuesday was held as a fundraising day. Pancakes were sold for a gold coin which went towards Caritas. Following that, an Ash Wednesday Liturgy was held on 2 March. Everyone got ash crosses on their heads to symbolise penance, mourning, and morality.
Aspire 9 students got to head out to Sorrento to swim with dolphins and the Year 7s went on camp in Ferngully Lodge in Healesville. After the camp, they got to go to Healesville sanctuary.
On 9 May, the Tyabb cross-country carnival day was held. Each year level had the chance to race around the campus and get points for their House. The Year 9s ran first, followed by the Year 7s and then the Year 8s. In the end, the day went to McCormack.
As a finish to the first semester of the year, an awards ceremony was held congratulating students on their academic and sporting achievements. This time was also taken to say goodbye to staff who were leaving.
On 27 July everyone went to the Casey Fields Athletics Track for our interhouse athletics day. There were a bunch of events like multiple races, discus, and shot put. It was rainy for most of the day but with a close score between Geoghegan and McCormack, with McCormack winning the day.
On 10 August, Tyabb’s Got Talent was held in the gym. There were multiple performances and even the audience got involved. It was a good time for everybody there.
During term 4, SIS Chess was led by Mr Ferguson. Students who signed on got to go on an excursion to a National State Competition at another college and compete against other teams. It was a fun experience to connect with other students who enjoyed contending in a game of strategy. Our squad tried our best even though we didn’t win.
On 14 October the SIS Book in a Day group headed to St Peter's College to find out who won the competition between multiple schools. We won first place.
The Christmas Hamper competition was introduced to help people in the community who might struggle with difficulties throughout the year. Each homeroom was asked to bring in various items of food that would contribute towards their hamper. As a bonus, the winning homeroom received a visit from Luna the College dog.
In the second last week of term 4, we advanced towards our new year levels with ‘Jumpstart’ week. This was a kick-off to our new classes and subjects for 2023. Year 7s got to look at what Year 8 would be like and the Year 8s could experience their new electives. Personally, I loved Computing and Systems. Year 9s also got to head off to Mornington for the week to get a feel for their new senior campus.
And finally, in the last week of school, we had the House Arts Festival week. We had a lot of time to rehearse and finalise our various performances. On the day of the festival, everyone went to Mornington, and it was great.

For an enjoyable new idea to get everyone moving in term 4, the teachers decided to create the Padua Tyabb Arts festival where every House was assigned a season of the year. Then each House had to perform multiple acts based on that one season - drama, dance, band, choir and art were all presented on 1 December.
Every Tuesday during Excel we split into our assigned groups to work on our performances. For example, I wanted to have a fun experience with the drama group and all of my group collaborated to create and act a small play trying to base it on our season, Spring. This was an entertaining experience with many different people getting involved and was a huge success.
With all this preparation we finally got a major chance to rehearse and bring our acts together during the last week of school for the year. On Monday we got the whole day where we split into our groups (with the exception of Period 3), which we used to practice ‘Here Comes the Sun’. On Tuesday we went to Mornington Campus to do our final rehearsal until the big day on Thursday. Two Houses went at a time to the huge Mornington St Clare performing arts theatre to put all our hard work together and make our final touches.
It all came down to the big day on Thursday where Geoghagen won. Big congratulations to them; this was the second event this year that Geoghegan won.
To sum it all up, it was a very fun and enjoyable experience throughout the whole term and I would definitely want to do it again next year.

Enviro day was busy, we helped the school be more environmentally friendly, by making beeswax wraps. We propagated native plants in the hands on learning area, so the native bushland could be regenerated, and we also cleaned up all around the school by picking up rubbish and making the school a better place to learn and have fun.
This was done not just for us, but for the enjoyment generations of students to come, and hopefully some wildlife.

As a leader this year, we have been given many opportunities, from leading assemblies to planning barbecues and helping to organise Tyabb’s Got Talent. Mrs Lunny held a morning tea for us on 8 November to show appreciation. During this morning tea, the Year 9s gave the Year 7 and 8 students some advice for the coming years. The advice given to us was to take every opportunity to be prepared for what we're getting into. Other advice was that it is okay to make mistakes because everything is a learning experience. It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of SRC, and I encourage everyone to give it a shot.

On Friday 4 November, Tyabb and Rosebud students were involved in the Padua concert night. Students performed a range of different pieces such as solos, bands, instrumental groups, and a drama performance. From Tyabb we had many vocal and instrumental solos and the Year 8 and Year 9 rock band. Everyone performed amazingly and we couldn't be happier with how the night went. Thank you so much to all of the students that performed and most importantly the teachers involved in running the concert.

In Food Tech, the Year 9s were asked to bake a cake over two weeks, first week baking the actual cake, second week decorating it. In my class, they were all very good-looking cakes and I'm assuming that the ones that were made in the other class were also very good-looking but I didn't get to see any of them. If you are someone that is not really into cooking or loves cooking, I would strongly suggest putting down Food Tech as one of your Year 9 electives.
The Year 8 SIS Indoor Cricket team consists of our wonderful coach Mr Gingle and our seven players - Will Doughton, Matteus Pinzan, Flynn Smallacombe, Adam Karnatz, Brett Wells, Cam Tozer and Tyler Rogers.
Every week on Thursday during Periods 4-6, we meet outside the office before boarding our bus to Saxon Sports (Frankston) or Mornington Indoor Cricket Centre.
Most of us hadn't ever played cricket before and all the rules were difficult to learn, however, we all gave it a really good go and became a really good team. We also got to know each other a lot better and helped each other out.
Overall, SIS Indoor Cricket was really fun and I suggest playing SIS sports as it gives you a chance to make new friends and most importantly, have fun!
Thank you to Mr Gingle for coaching us this season and a special thanks to Ms Love and Holly for coaching us when Mr Gingle couldn’t be there!

In term four, Mrs Bailey took the opportunity to coach the Girl’s Volleyball team. She made it her mission every week for the girls to have fun and also try and score some wins. Every Thursday, every one of the girls that made the team was excitedly jumping out of their shoes, ready to take on the other schools. It was a thrilling experience for everyone that played. We got to leave the campus and travel to different schools to try and take home a win. Although the volleyball team only won a couple of times, that didn’t stop us from trying to win the next week and the week after that. Mrs Bailey motivated us to try our hardest and also spoke to some people privately, and helped fight our nerves. She held training in the gym on a Tuesday lunchtime and helped us improve our skills. All of the girls worked extremely hard on their playing, and Mrs Bailey worked hard on helping us improve our skills and our confidence. It was a fantastic experience, and I am extremely grateful that I was involved with it.

At the start of the Year 8 Wood Tech project when I was just planning it out, I came up with the idea to make this massive bookshelf. When I showed Mr Tyrrell my design, he told me it would take too long to do in one term, so I would need to make one product over two tasks. He knew it would be hard, but he let me do it anyway. He told me we could make the back as the laminated board project and the shelves as the box project. I needed so much wood that I had to bring it all in from home. Merbau, Tasmanian Oak, Black Butt and Iron Bark are the woods that I used. I gave Mr Tyrrell my list of widths for the different types of wood and he cut them for me. I then glued it together with the help of my friends. We got glue all over our hands and arms. Once it had dried, the squares were then cut into hexagons by Mr Tyrrell and I glued them together in the pattern I wanted.
The next term was when we made the shelves. I used the pine from the wood room this time. Mr Tyrrell cut 30 degree angles for the sides of the shelves as well as some blocks that would help keep the wood together at the right angle. I glued the wood together to give more strength and I nailed them together until I created six hexagonal shelves. Then the tricky part was putting them on the back and not having any screws come through. Luckily, Mr Tyrrell said that he would do it for me. After that, all I had to do was sand it down using the orbital sander and oil it so the colours would pop.
I thoroughly enjoyed this project, but it was thanks to Mr Tyrrell that I got it done at all.

For World Teachers Day this year at Tyabb the Student Representative Council (SRC) developed colourful word art with positive words about all staff members at the campus. The SRC was given the task to develop the art, and the students came up with all the words included.
It was important to do this so the student body could let the teachers know that they are appreciated and why. Students from the Years 7, Year 8 and Year 9 SRC were involved and hopefully made a positive contribution to World Teachers Day!

On one of the last Aspire9 Wednesdays of the year, we were lucky enough to participate in a first aid course. It was a great experience for all involved and is very handy to know what to do if we ever encounter a situation where we would need to administer first aid. A massive thank you to Henrick for teaching us an important skill to have.

Last week the Tyabb Campus celebrated and gave thanks for the 2022 school year, commencing with a mass at St Mary’s church in Hastings, where together, we rejoiced in the season of Advent. Later, with a mixture of sadness in their leaving and pride in the young adults that they are becoming, we farewelled our 2022 Year 9 cohort at our end of year assembly. The assembly also provided the opportunity to celebrate the 2022 school year, along with the successes of our students’ academic achievements, with those receiving more than seven excellence and/or endeavour awards, presented with a badge. We congratulate these students .

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our incredible teachers and support staff, for all that they have done for our campus throughout the year. In particular, I wish to acknowledge staff departing the Tyabb Campus this year, including those that are transferring and undertaking new opportunities at our Mornington Campus - Mr Tomkins, Mrs Callaghan, Mr Ferguson and Mrs Moloney - along with Mr Voss who is moving to our Rosebud Campus and Mr Gleeson, Mrs Bath, and Mrs Parks, who will be undertaking teaching roles elsewhere. We also thank Ms Williams for ably covering semester 2 Arts and Technology classes.
Each of these staff has been a much-valued member of the Tyabb community, contributing their own God-given gifts and talents to make our campus the special place that it is. They will each be very much missed, and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.
Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of our Tyabb community a peace and joy-filled Christmas. I hope you all find some time for rest and relaxation over the festive season.
Take care and God bless!
