Dear families,

Helisma Phil

PHILLIP HELISMA

CO-DIRECTOR OF ROSEBUD CAMPUS

It is hard to believe that we are commencing the final weeks of term three. As was mentioned to all students in our regular campus assembly, an in an email letter home, we continue to reinforce the strong learning habits and routines that support our young people’s academic success and personal growth.

In terms of wearing our uniform with pride, from 1 September, students have the option of wearing either full winter uniform (until the end of term only) OR the full summer uniform. Students will not therefore, be required to wear ties from this date. Understandably, students will have grown since their summer dresses were last worn. Can you please ensure that, as per college policy, the school dress reaches the knee prior to being worn to school.

Blazers must be worn in Homeroom each morning and again when leaving school in the afternoon.

We have had yet another busy term with many activities – SIS Book in a Day, Proactive Policing Unit visit for Year 8s and 9s, Science Week, Literacy and Numeracy Week, Music night as well as some of our Rosebud students representing Padua in the SIS Athletics carnival and State Netball Competition to name a few.

All students are invited to wear their favourite team colours on Monday 15 September in return for a gold coin donation with the monies going to McAuley Community Services for Women. When we say team we mean AFL, Junior Footy, Soccer, Basketball, Rugby, Netball & Baseball. We remind students of our expectations in dress, with no open-toe shoes, and shoulders and mid riff to be covered. Please be aware that Friday 19 September is the last day of the school term, with classes concluding at the usual time of 3.00pm.

As we come towards the end of term, we would like to take a moment to give thanks for the dedication, energy and care shown by all our Rosebud teachers. Each day our staff support the learning of every student but also nurture the wellbeing of our young people. Without their support, our extracurricular activities would not be possible.

Furthermore, we thank all our families for your continued support.

Science Week

Padua College Rosebud students celebrated Science Week 2025 with a variety of exciting activities and competitions. From testing their knowledge in a fast-paced Science Trivia Kahoot, to getting creative with lab coat designing, and putting engineering skills to the test in paper plane building, students embraced the spirit of science in fun and engaging ways.

Literacy and Numeracy Week

Literacy and Numeracy Week, 29 August – 5 September, was celebrated across our school community. As we are all aware, literacy and numeracy are at the heart of every subject, shaping the way our students think, communicate, and problem-solve. Our students had the opportunities to engage in Quizzes, Scrabble and Jigsaw crossword activities throughout the break times.

Proactive Policing Unit visit

Last week, the Year 9 got a visit from two officers from the Somerville Police Station. We were lucky to have them come in and speak to us about online safety. They informed us about the dangers of sharing content online with strangers and our friends and other things concerning online safety. The speech was very informative and eye-opening. We are all very grateful for the visit from the officers, we all took a lot out of it and gained some valuable information from their speech that they gave us.

Father’s Day Breakfast

It was so nice to see everyone’s dads or special people (in my case my grandfather) there having a nice chat and a bacon and egg roll. We listened to Mr Durnan talk about his earlier career as an AFL player for Melbourne Football Club which I found very interesting. Interviewed by Mr Helisma, he told everyone about his best coaches, who he clicked with, the people that he didn’t like to play against. Not to mention his great idea of putting the names of all the people that played with a certain number on their jersey on a plaque. Everyone had so many questions, each more intriguing than the last. To finish the morning off, a pastry and a cup of coffee was a great way to end. I certainly enjoyed my time there and I am positive that all the dads and special people did too.

Rosebud Music Night

Congratulations to the following students: Renee Bradler; Kyri Athanasiadis; Harry Murray; Allegra Del Ben; Isabelle Underwood; Finley Elliott; Mason Rossi; Zac Davern; Archer Rand; Lacey Gilbert; Cy Pimlott; Tom McGough; Amaia Heath; Joseph Cluning; Kurtis Sosic; Tye Seeley; Zaya Donegan; Leila Scammell; Ava White; Sofia Mentiplay; Sophie D’Alia; Macie Kennett; and Ari Blanch, who all showcased their amazing musical talents at the Rosebud Music Night on Thursday 3 September.

None of this magic happens by accident. Our dedicated music teachers Samantha Clough, Paul Jenkins and instrumental teachers Gabrielle Parker, Duane Manning, Dave Tohill, Jamie Grima, Jason Rodi and Jack Mannock spent weeks coaching, rehearsing, and encouraging every student. Their dedication to each student ensured that these students were able to showcase their talents and shine. We thank them for their genuine care and support.

SIS Book in a Day Competition

SIS Book in a Day was extremely fun and informative, the authors were shown methods for character rounding and how to build characters by Wendy Orr, how to write a good plot by Damian Perry and we learnt how to show our author’s voice by Crystal Corocher. The workshop brought our skills together and showed us how to put together a good story.

The illustrators were taught about typography, front covers as well as design and general layout by Mr Tyrrell, Rosebuds VAD and VCD teacher. The illustrators also looked at the structure and received some general tips from Judy Watson. Judy also gave them the opportunity to work with charcoal and create some images.

Overall, the SIS book in a day workshop session was great fun for the illustrators and authors, we look forward to writing the book.

Intermediate Girls' Netball

The Year 9 Girls' Netball team had an exciting season filled with growth and teamwork. Despite a mix of wins and losses, the girls showed dedication and sportsmanship.

Players communicated effectively on the court, supporting each other during matches.

Notable progress was observed in shooting, defending, and overall game awareness. The whole team was a standout contributor.

The team has shown great development this season with 2 wins and 2 losses and we continued with dedication and fun times. We can achieve more success in our next game. Thank you to everyone for their support!

Junior Boys Football

This season, the SIS Junior Boys footy team played exceptionally well, finishing equal first. The boys managed impressive wins against Rivercrest, Bayside, Casey, and Woodleigh. They showed great courage and sportsmanship, led by Captain Kurtis. Special mention to Jake Shearer and Jude Farrelly leading goal kickers and to the backline warriors. A special thank you to Mr Smith and Ms de Longville for coaching us and for their support throughout the season.
