A Message from the Performing Arts Department

As the Autumn Term draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of our students and staff within the Performing Arts Department. From solemn liturgical performances to vibrant student showcases, this term has been one of creativity, commitment and community spirit.

Term Commencement: ANZAC Day & Opening Mass

The term began with Padua College’s ANZAC Day Liturgy and Opening Mass in April. The Music in the Spirit class led the music ministry for these events, with standout solo performances from Sophie Rault and Tua Parkes. These liturgies set a reverent and thoughtful tone for the term ahead, and we thank all students involved for their respectful and inspiring contributions.

Guys and Dolls Rehearsals: Collaboration in Action

May marked an important milestone in preparations for our upcoming school musical, Guys and Dolls. Over two intensive rehearsal days, more than 150 students came together across all aspects of the production—cast, band, crew, sound, lighting, costumes, set, props, and makeup—to bring Act 1 to life. These days concluded with a student-led talent showcase, where many students—some for the first time—took to the stage to share original compositions, heartfelt ballads, and even a daring circus performance by Year 11 student Solomon. The camaraderie and courage displayed by all was truly inspiring.

Performing Arts Showcase: A Two-Night Celebration

Shortly afterwards, the Performing Arts Centre hosted a spectacular two-night showcase involving over 120 students. Audiences were treated to a diverse and exhilarating program including:

  • Songs sung in Spanish, and guitars played in straw hats
  • A captivating duet by Sam Boyden and Tua Parkes
  • Year 8 students effortlessly bringing a challenging Metallica song to life
  • A rousing finale from the Stage Band featuring music by Tina Turner

The showcase celebrated not only the incredible talent of our performers but also the dedication of those working backstage and front of house. The professionalism and passion of all involved were exceptional.

Padua Day Celebrations

In June, Padua Day brought our entire community together in celebration. The Music in the Spirit class once again led the musical component of our whole-school Mass, with solo performances by Bonita Habils, Eva Cortes, Sam Boyden, Jake Symes, Tua Parkes, and Sophie Rault.

Following the Mass, the Performing Arts Centre foyer came alive with back-to-back performances from rock bands representing all three campuses. This cross-campus event offered junior musicians a chance to connect with their future musical peers from other campuses and experience the joy of inspiration.

VCE & VET Music: A Culture of Support and Excellence

This term also saw the commencement of rehearsals for the VCE and VCE VET Music Unit 3 & 4 performance exams. Each assessed performer is supported by a band of volunteer musicians, who dedicate their time and skills to assist in rehearsing and delivering a 25-minute recital.

The culture of collaboration and selflessness shown by our music students is remarkable. Many students are supporting multiple performers, exemplifying the spirit of teamwork and peer-led excellence that underpins our success in VET Music each year. These students will be performing selections from their exam sets in closed recital concerts over the coming fortnight.

Looking Ahead to Spring Term

As we prepare for a well-earned break, we are already looking forward to a packed and exciting Spring Term. Key upcoming events include:

  • The full-scale production of Guys and Dolls
  • Two additional Performing Arts showcases
  • A mid-term soirée highlighting soloist and duet items

We extend our deepest thanks to all students, staff, and families for your continued support of the Performing Arts at Padua College. We wish you a restful and rejuvenating break and look forward to another enriching term ahead.
